Reading Time: 7 minutes

The IT sector of India is and has always been the domain of great minds. It has played a pivotal role in the economic growth of the country. In 2018, the government think-tank, popularly known as the National Institution for Transforming India (NITI) Aayog focused on the development of AI research within the IT sectors.
This development came with the launch of the task force on AI for the economic transformation of India by the Commerce and Industry Department of the Government of India in 2017. Since then, AI has been on the rise. Different sectors are adopting AI technologies in India.

The Government’s Helping Hands

With the Government of India urging towards AI, different AI initiatives are taking place and also numerous startups are getting funded. Mayank Kapur, the CTO of Indian AI startup Gramener explains that the government is still the biggest potential customer for the data science services in India. There are also different public sectors that are supporting the spread of AI.
The government initiated a proof-of-concept pilot in 15 districts in India where AI-based & real-time advisory-based satellite imagery, weather data, and similar other information. This is helpful for increasing farm yields, especially in those areas where the farm production levels are low. Also, another long-term project for building a complete NLP platform is in operation.
These would help in the development of different applications like conversational general and career counseling through chatbots & assistants, that can converse in 22 Indian languages.

What do the Indian CEOs have to Say About the Growth of AI in India?

India is in the ‘learning & growing’ zone when it comes to AI-powered business solutions. Yes, there can also be hindrances. This is due to the underdeveloped economy of the country. However, a lot of CEOs think that AI has immense potential in India, especially for startups.
Dr. Nishant Chandra, the Data Science Leader of Science Group at AIG stated in an interview, “Indian society is not as forgiving to failure in entrepreneurship as the US or Europe” while speaking about the high stakes of failure in India.
Aakrit Vaish, the CEO of Haptik, Inc. said in the next 10 years, the understanding of AI and its use will become more common amongst the technology industry executives. He also thinks that India might go in the direction in which China has gone, economically.
Komal Talwar from the GOI’s AI Task Force stated that, “We think AI could have a great impact in the health sector. There is a scarcity of good doctors and nurses, with AI the machine can do the first round of diagnostics. Staff can carry machines with them to help cut down on the physical presence needed for doctors.”
According to her, the government is urging startups to have AI applications which also has a social impact. For instance, AI for the healthcare sector, or AI for the education sector, etc. It will be great to see a healthy competition amidst startups to solve social problems.
Professor Manish Gupta, the CEO of VideoKen said that there is a trend of copying the ideas in the AI market of India. This prevents the Indian potential to thrive and participate in the global market. Startups need to have their own innovative ideas to use AI to its highest potential.
